This weekend I attended my first ever trading card show at the Kings Hall, now if you’ve never been to a trading card show before, the experience can feel a little overwhelming (as it certainly did for me walking in). Rows of tables filled with Pokémon, sports cards, Magic: The Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and other TCGs, hundreds of fellow collectors, and countless opportunities to buy, sell, and trade can make it difficult to know where to start.

The good news is that trading card shows are some of the most welcoming events in the hobby. Whether you’re hunting for a rare grail, looking to complete a set, or simply curious about the community, your first card show is likely to be an exciting and memorable experience. A Huge Variety of Cards

This might sound pretty obvious, and stay with us on this one but one of the biggest surprises for first-time visitors is just how much variety there is. Every dealer brings their own inventory, meaning no two tables are exactly the same.

• Pokémon singles and sealed products
• Magic: The Gathering cards
• Yu-Gi-Oh! cards

Tip 1: Take Your Time

There’s no need to rush into buying the first card you see. Most shows have dozens, if not hundreds, of vendors. You may spot the same card at multiple tables, sometimes at very different prices.

Taking a full lap also helps you identify vendors you’d like to revisit later. This is vital to making sure you get the best cards for the best prices.

Tip 2: Set a Budget

It’s incredibly easy to overspend at a card show.

With so many exciting cards on display, impulse purchases can quickly add up. Setting yourself a budget before you arrive helps keep your spending under control while ensuring you leave with something you’re genuinely happy with. Many vendors now accept card payments, but some still prefer cash, especially for smaller purchases. Bringing a mixture of payment methods is always a good idea.

Tip 3: Got a Question? Talk To The Vendors!

Card dealers are collectors too.

Most are more than happy to answer questions, explain the history behind certain cards, or help you find something specific. If you’re looking for a particular player, Pokémon, or set, simply ask. Dealers often have additional stock stored behind the table that isn’t on display.

Building relationships with vendors can also benefit you at future events, as they may remember your collecting interests or contact you when they acquire something you’re searching for.

Tip 4: Negotiation is Part of the Hobby

Like it or loathe it, negotiation on price is very much part of the game and unlike traditional retail stores, pricing at trading card shows is often flexible.

While you shouldn’t expect huge discounts, polite negotiation is completely normal. If you’re purchasing multiple cards from the same vendor, it’s perfectly reasonable to ask whether they can offer a bundle price. Approach negotiations respectfully, and remember that dealers need to make a profit too. A friendly conversation usually goes much further than trying to aggressively haggle over every pound.

Tip 5: Bring Cards to Trade

Many attendees don’t just buy cards, they trade them.

If you have duplicates, cards you’ve outgrown, or items that no longer fit your collection, bringing them along can open up opportunities to swap for something you really want. Keep your cards organised and protected in sleeves or binders. Knowing their approximate market value beforehand will also help ensure any trades are fair.

You’ll probably leave with more cards than you planned.

Bringing a backpack, storage box, or card case helps keep your purchases safe throughout the day. It’s also worth carrying spare penny sleeves and top loaders if you expect to make higher-value purchases.

If you’re buying graded cards, make sure they’re packed securely to avoid damage while travelling home. Stay vigilant as well and don’t showcase that you’ve just spent a lot of money on slabs if you have to travel far to get home as well.

Tip 7: Expect a Friendly Community

One of the best parts of any trading card show is the people.

You’ll meet collectors of all ages with different interests and levels of experience. Some are lifelong hobbyists, while others may be attending their very first event just like you. Don’t hesitate to strike up conversations. Many collectors enjoy sharing stories about memorable pulls, favourite sets, or recent additions to their collections.

The hobby is built around shared enthusiasm, and card shows are a fantastic place to experience that first-hand.

While it’s tempting to focus solely on finding the perfect card, remember that the experience itself is part of the hobby.

Take time to browse every aisle, chat with vendors and fellow collectors, and enjoy being surrounded by people who share your passion.
