The Ultimate Trading Card Glossary

Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned collector, this guide will help you understand the key terms used in the world of trading cards. We've split it into three sections to cover general concepts, sports cards, and Pokémon cards.

General Trading Card Hobby Terms

Base Card

A standard card from a set without special features.

Parallel

A variation of a base card with different colours, patterns, or finishes.

Insert

A special card included in packs at lower odds than base cards. Usually these cards will fall 1 in every pack depending on the collection.

Short Print (SP)

A card produced in smaller quantities than standard cards.

Super Short Print (SSP)

Extremely limited cards, harder to pull than SPs.

Hit

A valuable card pulled from a pack. Primarily a auto, relic, rare insert, numbered card.

Break

A group opening of boxes/cases where participants buy teams or slots. Usually sold and streamed via platforms like WhatNot, eBay or Twitch.

Case Break

Opening an entire case of product in one session. A case depending on the product will usually contain in and around 12 boxes.

Blaster Box

Retail box format typically sold in stores.

Hobby Box

Premium box sold through manufacturers or hobby shops with guaranteed hits inside them.

Pack Odds

The probability of pulling certain types of cards.

Checklist

A full list of all cards in a specific set.

Set Building

The act of a collector collecting every card in a set.

Rainbow

Collecting all parallels of a specific card in a set. This usually includes all numbered cards and non-numbered cards.

Grading

Professional assessment of a card’s condition.

Slab

A graded card sealed in a protective plastic case scored between 1-10 depending on condition.

Raw Card

A card that has not been graded.

Mint Condition

Near-perfect card condition.

Centering/Centring

Alignment of the card’s borders.

Edge Wear

Damage or wear along card edges.

Corner Damage

Bent or worn corners.

Surface Damage

Scratches or print defects.

Pop Report

A report showing how many copies of a card have been graded.

Serial Numbered Card

A card stamped with a limited print run number.

One-of-One (1/1)

A unique card with only one copy in existence.

Redemption Card

A card exchanged for a promised item (usually autographs).

Auto (Autograph)

A card signed by the subject.

Relic / Memorabilia Card

A card containing a piece of game-used material.

Patch Card

A relic card featuring multi-colored fabric.

Case Hit

A rare card typically found once per case.

Print Run

The total number of copies produced.

Refractor / Foil

Cards with reflective or shiny finishes.

Die-Cut

Cards cut into unique shapes in collections. Sometimes these sorts of cards will contain relic items or be ultra-rare short print cards.

Misprint

Cards with production errors. This could be something like a bleed of another card into yours or obvious errors in the card but not limited to minor defects like words missing etc.

Factory Set

A complete set sold together by the manufacturer.

Sports Cards

1. Rookie Card (RC) – First officially licensed card of a player.

2. Prospect Card – A card of a player before their major league debut.

3. Bowman 1st – First card of a player in a Bowman set.

4. Veteran (Vet) – An established professional player.

5. Hall of Famer (HOF) – A player inducted into a sport’s Hall of Fame.

6. Game-Used – Memorabilia worn or used in an official game.

7. Player-Worn – Memorabilia worn but not necessarily in a game.

8. On-Card Auto – Autograph signed directly on the card.

9. Sticker Auto – Autograph applied via sticker.

10. Patch Auto (RPA) – Card featuring both a patch and autograph.

11. Jersey Match – Serial number matches player’s jersey number.

12. eBay 1/1 – Informal term for a unique-numbered card.

13. Team Break – Break format where participants buy teams.

14. Random Team Break – Teams assigned randomly.

15. Player Break – Participants buy individual players.

16. Case Hit Insert – Rare inserts found once per case.

17. Flagship Product – Main yearly release from a brand.

18. Chrome Card – Glossy, metallic-style card.

19. Refractor Variations – Different levels of reflective parallels.

20. Gold Parallel – Often numbered to 50.

21. Black Parallel – Often numbered to 1 or 5.

22. Printing Plate – Metal plate used in production, often 1/1.

23. Logoman Patch – Patch featuring league logo.

24. Booklet Card – Foldable multi-panel card.

25. Dual/Triple Auto – Cards signed by multiple players.

26. Redemption Expiration – Deadline to redeem a redemption card.

27. PSA 10 / Gem Mint – Highest common grade.

28. BGS 9.5 – High grade from Beckett.

29. Subgrades – Breakdown of grading categories.

30. Population Control – Manufacturer limiting supply.

31. Rookie Patch Auto (RPA) – Premium rookie card with patch and auto.

32. SSP Variation – Rare alternate image rookie card.

33. True Rookie – The most recognized rookie card version.

34. Color Match – Card color matches team colors.

35. Laundry Tag – Patch featuring clothing tag.

Pokémon Cards

1. Holo (Holographic) – Card with a shiny foil image.

2. Reverse Holo – Card with a holographic background instead of artwork.

3. Full Art – Card where artwork covers entire surface.

4. Alternate Art (Alt Art) – Special alternate illustration.

5. Secret Rare – Card numbered beyond the set list.

6. Ultra Rare – High-rarity card classification.

7. Hyper Rare – Rainbow-colored ultra rare card.

8. Gold Card – Premium gold-colored rare card.

9. Trainer Card – Non-Pokémon card used for gameplay effects.

10. Energy Card – Cards used to power attacks.

11. Evolution Line – Pokémon progression (Basic → Stage 1 → Stage 2).

12. Basic Pokémon – Starting form Pokémon.

13. Stage 1 / Stage 2 – Evolved Pokémon forms.

14. EX / GX / V / VMAX / VSTAR – Different powerful Pokémon card types.

15. HP (Hit Points) – Health of a Pokémon.

16. Attack Cost – Energy required to perform an attack.

17. Weakness – Type that deals extra damage.

18. Resistance – Type that reduces damage.

19. Retreat Cost – Energy needed to switch Pokémon.

20. Set Symbol – Icon indicating which set a card belongs to.

21. First Edition – Early print run with special stamp.

22. Shadowless – Early cards without shadow on artwork box.

23. PSA 10 Charizard – Iconic high-value graded card example.

24. Pull Rate – Odds of pulling rare cards.

25. Booster Pack – Standard sealed pack of cards.

26. Elite Trainer Box (ETB) – Special box with packs and accessories.

27. Promo Card – Card released outside standard packs.

28. Misprint / Error Card – Card with printing mistake.
