How To Grade With Beckett
Protecting What Matters Most

Why Card Condition Is Everything

The sports and trading card market has matured into a serious hobby and investment space. Grading companies like PSA, Beckett (BGS), and UK-based services like ACE Grading assess cards on a numerical scale. Even minor wear, a soft corner, a surface scratch, or humidity damage, can drop a card by multiple grades and cost you significantly at resale.

Understanding grading isn’t just for people submitting cards. It’s the best framework for understanding what you’re protecting against every time you touch a card. Before diving into protection supplies, read our dedicated Grading Guides to understand exactly what graders look for.

So What's The Point?

The Four Grading Pillars, What Graders Actually Assess

Whether you’re submitting to PSA, Beckett, or ACE Grading, all major grading companies assess cards across four core areas:

  • Centring: Is the image evenly framed within the borders? Even slight off-centring can cost you a grade.
  • Corners: All four corners must be sharp and undamaged. This is where most handling damage occurs first.
  • Edges: Clean edges with no nicks, chips, or whitening. Whitening is especially common on darker-bordered cards.
  • Surface: Front and back must be free from scratches, print lines, stains, or indentations.

Every protection habit in this guide is designed to defend one or more of these four areas.
